Cannes Best Director Winner “Foxcatcher” is coming to VIFF

Every year, the Vancouver International Film Festival’s (VIFF) programming team seeks out exceptional films to bring to the Vancouver festival goers, and this year in May the team found an excellent selection of award winners at the Cannes Film Festival. Among the selection is the winner for Best Director (Bennett Miller), the critally-acclaimed (88% Rotten Tomato) biographical sports drama “Foxcatcher”.

Based on the true and tragic story of Olympic wrestler brothers Mark and Dave Schultz and their psychologically disturbed benefactor John du Pont (Dave Du Pond), the star-studded drama takes a deep look at the complicated events that led to the murder of Dave Schultz by du Pont.
The film chronicles the dark and twisted relationship between du Pont, played by an almost unrecognizable Steve Carell, and Mark Schultz, portrayed by Hollywood’s favorite blockbuster hunk Channing Tatum, who reportedly described the role as one of the “most emotionally complicated performance of his life”.
From director Bennett Miller, who directed Moneyball (2011) and Capote (2005), Foxcatcher is a must-see for those interested in an engrossing analysis of psychological illness and the pitfalls of ambition and pride.
