Vancity Theatre/VIFF’s Black History Month
film series expands to Granville Island
February 20 & 21, 2016
In her fourth year curating the Black History Month Series at VanCity Theatre/VIFF, Granville Island Cultural Society’s Executive Director Barbara Chirinos decided it was time to extend the series to Granville Island. In partnership with Vancity Theatre/VIFF and CMHC Granville Island, two FREE screenings (accompanied by community events) will take place at The Granville Island Revue Stage as part of The Winterruption Festival.
Barbara says of the events, “When I first moved to Vancouver in 2002, I couldn’t find anywhere to have my hair cut or styled. When I finally found a place upon recommendation, the ideas this woman had were absurd. I just had to walk out of there. This is a predicament many men and women of colour face in Vancouver, and we hope that Afro Hair Savoir Faire will offer a number of resources, helpful tips, and an enlightening conversation to Vancouver residents. A Ballerina’s Tale and the post-screening discussion with Dr. Henry Daniel and Ballet BC dancers Livona Ellis and Gilbert Small offers a unique opportunity for young dancers to see people of colour not only living the dream of dancing professionally, but to ask them questions about their individual experiences. This, to me, is special, important, and why we offer these free events.”

Afro Hair Savoir Faire

A celebration of short films and inspiring techniques to care for Afro hair naturally.
Program begins at the Revue Stage followed by the Faire in the lobby of the Arts Club Theatre.
This inclusive Black History Month event showcases the natural hair movement sweeping the African diaspora. Enjoy live tutorials on Afro hair care, styles and culture alongside short-films (Hairpiece: A Film for Nappy Headed People, by Ayoka Chenzira, and NFB film Black Bold and Beautiful, by Nadine Valcin) and community building. Afro Hair Savoir Faire, springing inspiration and empowerment to every kind of curl. Produced by Vanessa Richards and Hosted by Jackie Essombe.

A Ballerina’s Tale examines the career of the first African-American principal dancer of the American Ballet Theatre.
The VanCity Theatre/VIFF and the Granville Island Cultural Society welcome you to celebrate Black History Month with our presentation of ‘A Ballerina’s Tale’. This feature documentary examines the struggles and triumphs in the career of Misty Copeland, the first African-American named principal dancer of the prestigious American Ballet Theatre. Immediately following the film, Dr. Henry Daniel, Professor of Dance and Performance Studies in the School for the Contemporary Arts at SFU, will facilitate a one on one discussion with Ballet BC dancers, Livona Ellis and Gilbert Small.
