Radiohead sent us a 35mm print of “Daydreaming”

We seriously get some awesome office mail around here! VIFF staffers came back from lunch on Wednesday to a copy of Radiohead’s new music video “Daydreaming” – on a 35mm reel – directed by Academy Award-nominated Paul Thomas Anderson, with a note on the label that read, “We’ve made a film, here it is. We’d be happy if you played it!” Amazing!

Processed with VSCO with c3 preset

Radiohead, we will gladly comply.

The “Daydreaming” video marked the first collaboration between the director and the full band, though there have been explicit ties between them for almost a decade, and more abstract connections that extend back even further. Both Radiohead and Anderson are famous, mostly-mainstream juggernauts who have reigned over their respective scenes for around two decades, garnering consistent critical adoration as well as the fervent fan devotion. In hindsight, such a direct collision of their worlds almost feels overdue. (Stereogum)

And according to Consequence of Sound, in the first 24 hours of its release, upwards of three million Radiohead diehards viewed the clip on Youtube.

So, unless you’ve been hiding in the 90’s and haven’t been on the Internet at all, you’ve probably either seen, read or listened in some form to the new album. BUT trust us (although we may be preaching to the choir if you’re reading a blog off a film festival website!) – “Daydreaming” is much better on 35 mm in a state of the art theatre setting than on a screen the size of your palm off your Youtube app slouched across your coffee-stained sofa any day. 🙂

Vancity Theatre will be playing the video ahead of these films next week.

Moviehouse Rock (presented by Michael van den Bos) next Wednesday May 18th at 6:30pm and Men & Chickens on Friday May 20th at 10:30pm.

Come do a little daydreaming…
