VIFF and Vancity Credit Union, VIFF’s new Social and Environmental Impact Partner, are excited to launch a Community Impact Video Competition.

This new, short video competition invites you to submit a short film nominating standout locals making an impact in the areas of environmental sustainability, social justice, financial inclusion, or reconciliation.

The top 3 video creators and community nominees, selected by a jury, will receive a cash prize, and the winning nominee will be profiled in a short film screened in advance of select documentaries and Vancity Impact Talk events at the Vancity Theatre.

What we’re looking for

This year, VIFF and Vancity are co-hosting monthly films and talks highlighting social and environmental issues from around the world. We know that there are also plenty of stories right here at home that deserve their moment on the big screen. This competition is about sharing those stories and celebrating local heroes who go above and beyond in their dedication to building healthier and more sustainable communities.

Know somebody like that? Tell them about the competition or enter yourself – and you don’t need fancy editing skills or software to do it. This competition is about community members making a difference, and the important thing is the stories you have to tell.

How to enter

  • The contest period runs from May 1 – June 30
  • Entrants will create a short film less than 60 seconds in length**. The film must showcase the efforts and impact of a local unsung hero who inspires by example and makes social or environmental impact in the community.
  • Upload the video to YouTube, Vimeo or any other video hosting site with a password-protected link.
  • Go to www.goviff.org/impact-video to fill out the submission form and provide the video link and password.

Prizes

Creators of the winning submissions will receive one of the following cash prizes and individual being profiled or featured will receive a matching donation to support their impact work:

  • $2,500 for 1st place
  • $1,500 for 2nd place
  • $1,000 for 3rd place

The 1st place featured community member and their work will also star in a short film commissioned by the VIFF. The film will play before the monthly Impact Film and Vancity Impact Talk screenings at VIFF’s Vancity Theatre.

Winners will be announced the week of July 23, 2018.
