Establishing Shots: July 2-8, 2021

Every week, Establishing Shots offers some further enlightenment on the films that will be screening in-cinema at the VIFF Centre and online through VIFF Connect.

Tove

“What distinguishes Tove from lesser fare… is that the protagonist is rarely in danger of being explained away. The roots of her inventiveness lie bedded deep, where they belong, and Jansson herself cannot quite account for the ensuing blooms… Tove dispatched me down a rabbit hole, or through a Moomin door. I recommend the trip.” Anthony Lane, New Yorker

“Along the way, parallels with key characters from the children’s stories and their adventures are gestured at vaguely. But the film doesn’t particularly require in-depth knowledge of Moominism and can be enjoyed for its bright performances, on-point costumes and sets, and empathic portrait of young love.” Leslie Felperin, Hollywood Reporter

Korean Film Festival

This year’s Korean Film Festival has launched on VIFF Connect and turned the spotlight on Youn Yuh-jung. This year’s Oscar-winner is featured in no less than four films that demonstrate her breadth as a performer. In the lead up to the Oscars, the venerated actress sat down with The Hollywood Reporter’s Rebecca Sun to discuss her 50-year career. In the resulting pieces, Korean film scholar Kim Kyung Hyun surmises, “She always went against the grain of the chaste womanhood in television and movies. As Korea was coming to terms with modernity [in the late 1970s], out of a period of really dark dictatorship that required women to sacrifice themselves, she was completely the opposite. She’s been the most maverick of actresses.”

Our VIFF+ members are currently enjoying free access to more than 30 films and talks on VIFF Connect. Joining the collection this week are Bruce McDonald’s riotous Hard Core Logo (on the occasion of its 25th anniversary), as we well as two masterfully crafted, exceptionally tense dramas: Kitty Green’s The Assistant and Ladj Ly’s Les Misérables. Memberships start at only $12 a month.
