Launched in 2013, Vancouver International Film Festival’s BC Spotlight program highlights British Columbia-produced films screening at the festival each year. This year, the program features 13 spectacular BC films ranging from comedy, drama, horror, to documentary.
Aside from the dedicated BC Spotlight programming initiative (12 films in 2013 and 13 films this year), VIFF will also be awarding the best BC film with 2 cash and 2 in-kind awards.
To help build audience awareness and excitement for the featured films, the #MustSeeBC campaign was created. The campaign and its special micro-site allow fans and festival-goers to preview trailers of the upcoming BC films and vote (September 11th to 24th) on which film are most excited for. The winning film takes the title “Audience Must-See-Film” and also earns the highly-coveted screening slot at the BC Spotlight Awards and Gala on October 4, 2014.
In effort to provide support and networking opportunities for local BC filmmakers, the BC Spotlight Industry Party is held to bring together key individuals from many of the creative industries that support the development of local film. Additionally, enhanced marketing campaigns were created to expand support from industry experts, training filmmakers on leveraging online marketing tools.
Not surprisingly, many of the BC Spotlight films screened last year went on to win awards at other festivals and the majority received theatrical releases.
